Looking for a Screen Studio alternative?

Screen Studio made this category, and Prequel is aimed squarely at the same finished video: automatic zooms, a perspective tilt on the push-in, focus falling away from the subject, and 4K at 120 fps against their 4K 60. $9 a month — the same as their yearly rate and well under their monthly one — or $29 once, which is the lifetime licence they stopped selling in 2025. Seven days free to judge the output before you pay.

What is Screen Studio, and what is it good at?

Screen Studio is a macOS screen recorder that made this category. It records your screen, watches where your cursor goes, and turns that into zooms and smooth cursor movement automatically — so a plain walkthrough comes out looking like somebody edited it. It also frames a webcam, puts the recording on a background, records system audio, exports up to 4K 60, and records an iPhone or iPad over USB with the device frame drawn in.

It is a mature, well-made product from a small team, and it is genuinely the thing most people mean when they say they want a video that looks produced. If you have never used anything in this category, Screen Studio is the reference point — including for us.

Why do people look for a Screen Studio alternative?

Overwhelmingly one reason: it is a subscription, and it did not used to be.

Screen Studio sold a one-time licence until October 2025, when it was withdrawn for new customers. Existing holders keep their version and were given updates into 2027, but anyone arriving today has two options: $29 a month billed monthly, or $9 a month billed yearly — $108 a year. There is no free tier.

That is the friction. A screen recorder is a tool people open a few times a month, it runs entirely on their own machine, and paying rent for it feels different from paying rent for something with servers behind it. The founder has been unusually candid about the reaction, saying publicly that he regrets how the change was handled.

Worth being fair about the number, because most comparison pages are not: $9 a month billed yearly is not expensive. If you record regularly, Screen Studio is good value, and the objection is the shape of the payment rather than the size of it. Prequel is $9 a month — the same as their yearly rate, and a third of their monthly one — so on the year the two are level and price is not the argument here. This page will not pretend it is. What you are choosing between is two finished videos.

The second reason is scale. Screen Studio is built for short pieces, and long takes are where people report trouble — a multi-hour recording producing an enormous project, no export queue, and no editing while an export runs. If your work is thirty-second demos, none of that will ever touch you.

Is Prequel a good Screen Studio alternative?

For the core job, yes. Prequel records the screen, the webcam, the microphone and system audio as separate tracks, watches where you click and what you type, and opens an editor on the take with the zooms already placed, the camera framed and a background applied. Same idea, same output shape.

Four concrete differences:

  • The push-in is a shot, not a crop. Every zoom carries a perspective tilt and yaw, and focus falls away from whatever it is aimed at — so the frame has a direction and the thing that matters is the thing in focus. That is the pass an editor would otherwise make by hand, and it is what makes the export read as cinematic rather than merely zoomed.
  • It exports higher. Up to 4K at 120 frames per second, against Screen Studio's 4K 60.
  • Typing drives zooms too. A burst of typing is treated as a moment worth pushing into, not just a click — which matters if you record code or forms.
  • There is still a lifetime licence. $29, bought once, with nothing to renew — which is the thing Screen Studio withdrew in October 2025. The subscription is $9 a month, matching their yearly rate without asking you to commit to a year, and transcripts, uploads and shareable links are in both rather than sold separately. If you are paying Screen Studio yearly the two monthly bills are the same, and what differs is what happens if you stop.

What do you give up by switching?

Two things, and we would rather name them than have you find out.

Screen Studio records iPhones and iPads. Prequel does not. Plug a device in and Screen Studio detects the model and colour and draws the frame. Prequel captures a display, a window or a region of your Mac — nothing else. If mobile demos are your work, that alone settles it.

Screen Studio has been around far longer. Years of releases, thousands of users and a support history behind it. Prequel is new. That is a real difference and no feature table shows it.

If neither of those stops you, the argument is straightforward: the same job, without the subscription.

How it works

Three steps to a finished video

  1. Record your screen and cameraPick a display, a window or an area you drag out, with your camera, microphone and system audio each on their own track.
  2. Zooms and layout are applied automaticallyPrequel reads where you clicked and typed, then places the zooms, frames your camera and sets a background behind it.
  3. Edit, export and shareMove a zoom, trim a clip or fix a caption, then export one MP4 at up to 4K or send a link that plays anywhere.

Zoom and pan

Zooms that follow the action

Prequel automatically zooms in when you click or type, then softens the rest of the window so viewers know where to look. Every zoom is added to the timeline, so you can move, retime or delete it at any time.

Layouts

Switch layouts clip by clip

Choose from fourteen layouts for the same take: camera in the corner, beside the screen, split with it or hidden entirely. Use one layout for the whole video, or change it clip by clip.

Subtitles

Subtitles you can edit like text

Prequel transcribes every word on your Mac when the editor opens. Fix captions by typing in the transcript, choose a subtitle style or delete a sentence to remove it from the video.

Teleprompter

A teleprompter that follows your voice

Prequel hangs your script from the notch, just under the camera, and follows your voice — the word you're saying lights up as you say it. Wander off script and it waits for you; skip ahead or fall behind and it catches up within a couple of words.

Instant edit

Start with the edit already done

Prequel records where you click and type, then opens the editor with zooms already placed, a framed camera and a polished background. Spend less time building the first cut and more time fine-tuning.

  • Zooms placedOn every click and every burst of typing
  • Camera framedShaped, sized and set in a corner
  • Background appliedPadding, radius, border and shadow
  • Audio balancedMicrophone and system on separate gains
  • Cursor cleaned upSmoothed, resized, hidden when it idles

The editor

Everything you would have done by hand

It opens by itself when you stop recording, on the take you just made. Nothing to import, nothing to line up.

Guide attention automatically

Prequel zooms into the part of the screen that matters: the cursor, a region you draw, or whatever you are typing into. Set the level, the speed and how much the rest of the frame blurs.

Look present without taking over the video

Your camera stays framed and out of the way: circle, squircle, rounded, wide or portrait, in any corner and any size. It is never burned into the recording, so none of it is decided while you record.

Make recordings look designed

Add a background, padding and a shadow without editing any of it by hand. Your own wallpaper by default, seven bundled presets, gradients and solids.

Cut the parts nobody needs to see

Trim the pauses yourself, slice by slice, with a waveform under every clip. Layout, background and audio can all change mid-take.

Keep the pointer out of the way

Fifteen pointer styles, resized so the cursor survives a zoom. Smoothed while it travels, and hidden after a few seconds of stillness.

Export the frame you approved

The preview and the exporter draw the same plan, so the file matches what you signed off in the editor.

Quality

Videos stay sharp at 4K

Capture and export run on your Mac's own media engine. 1080p at 60 fps records without dropping frames, and 4K is a setting you pick.

FAQ

Zooms, exports and the rest

What is the best Screen Studio alternative?

It depends on what pushed you to look. If it was the video, Prequel is the closest thing to it — the same automatic zooms, plus a perspective tilt, focus falling away from whatever the zoom is aimed at, and export at 4K 120 where Screen Studio stops at 4K 60. If it was the price, be careful which number you are comparing: their $29 is the monthly rate and their yearly one works out at $9 a month, which is what Prequel charges monthly — so the two are level if you commit to a year with them, and Prequel is a third of the price if you do not. There is also a $29 lifetime licence here, which is the thing they withdrew in 2025. If it was macOS-only, neither of us has a Windows build and you want something cross-platform.

How much does Screen Studio cost?

$29 a month billed monthly, or $9 a month billed yearly — $108 a year. There is no free tier; both plans are paid. Checked on 21 August 2026.

Does Screen Studio still have a lifetime licence?

Not for new customers. The one-time licence was withdrawn in October 2025 and Screen Studio is subscription-only now. People who already held one keep their version and were given updates into 2027. Their own FAQ still carries an entry titled 'What happens if I purchased a one-time license in the past?'

Is there a free Screen Studio alternative?

Not Prequel — it is $9 a month, or $29 once, after a seven-day trial with the whole app in it. There are free recorders in this category and open-source ones among them, so if free is the hard requirement the answer is one of those rather than either of us. What you give up is the cinematic pass: they capture faithfully and leave the zooms, the tilt, the focus, the framing and the cuts to you.

Is Prequel a good Screen Studio alternative?

For a Mac recording that needs to look produced, yes — the automatic zooms, the framed camera, the backgrounds and the cursor work are the same job, and Prequel adds the parts that make a take read as directed rather than recorded: a perspective tilt on the push-in, focus falling away from the subject, and export at up to 4K 120 against their 4K 60. Screen Studio does two things we do not: it records iPhones and iPads over USB, and it is a mature product with years of releases behind it rather than a new one. It is also cheaper if you pay for a year up front.

Can I open my Screen Studio recordings in Prequel?

Not their project files — those are Screen Studio's own format. An exported MP4 is just a video and can be recorded over or cut alongside anything else, but a finished export has the zooms already burned in, so there is nothing left to re-time.
