Every line is a fraction of the short edge, so the pattern looks the same at 1080p and at 6K.

Squares, at the size you need them

Graph paper is a flat ground and two sets of lines. The hard part is getting it at the size of the thing you are putting it behind, which is why this page draws it on request rather than handing you a tiling image. Pick 1080p and you get 1920 by 1080. Pick the 6K display and you get 6016 by 3384, with the same number of squares across it.

That is what the Grid slider sets: squares across the short edge, from 14 to 72. Every distance in the drawing is a fraction of that edge, so a wallpaper for a phone and one for a Pro Display are the same picture at two sizes.

Every fifth line is heavier

A plain grid of identical lines is hard to count. This one bands at five, the way engineering paper does, and the bands are counted from the bottom left corner. Five small squares make one big one, and you can read off a distance without touching a ruler.

PNG or SVG

The PNG is painted in this tab, at the size in the dock, and saved straight to your downloads folder. Use it as a desktop wallpaper, a slide background or the ground behind a screenshot.

The SVG is the better file if anything will resize it again. It is two paths and a rectangle, so Figma, Illustrator, Sketch and any browser will scale it to any size with the hairlines still hairlines. It is also a few kilobytes.

Behind a recording

Prequel ships this grid as one of seven drawn backgrounds in its editor, where it is redrawn at the export's own resolution. Record your Mac's screen, and the editor opens with the zooms already placed, your camera framed and a background behind it.

How it works

Drawing in 3 steps

  1. Choose the colourEight palettes, each shown as the grid itself. Paper is the one where the lines are darker than the ground.
  2. Set the squaresThe slider sets how many squares fit across the short edge, from 14 to 72. The preview redraws as you move it.
  3. Save the filePNG at the size in the dock, or SVG if the grid will be scaled again somewhere else.

What it does

Free, and still worth using

Read a distance off it

Every fifth line is heavier, banded from the bottom left corner. Five small squares make one big one, the way engineering paper works.

Scale it again later

The SVG is two paths and a rectangle. Resize it to anything in Figma or Illustrator and the hairlines stay hairlines.

Fit any shape of frame

A 9:16 frame grows rows and keeps the pitch. Nothing is resampled, because the grid is worked out again at the size you asked for.

Keep the file off a server

The grid is drawn in this tab and saved from this tab. Nothing is uploaded and there is no watermark on the file.

On a Mac, the editing is already done

Prequel records your screen at its full resolution, then opens an editor with the zooms already placed, your camera framed and a background applied. Export one MP4 at up to 4K.

No credit card required

  • Zooms placed on every click
  • Camera shaped, sized and framed
  • Background, padding and shadow
  • Microphone and system on separate gains
  • Cursor smoothed and resized

FAQ

Squares, sizes and printing

Is it free?

Yes. No account, no card and no watermark. Make as many as you like.

What size are the squares?

They are a fraction of the frame's short edge, so the count is the setting and the millimetres follow from the size you picked. At 38 squares across a 1080p frame, each one is about 28 pixels.

Can I print it?

Yes, and the SVG is the file to print. It has no resolution of its own, so a printer renders the lines at its own dots rather than at the PNG's pixels.

PNG or SVG?

PNG for a wallpaper, a slide or the ground behind a screenshot. SVG for anything that will be resized or recoloured afterwards.

Can I use it commercially?

Yes. It is your file, there is no watermark on it and no attribution is asked for.

Why does Prequel have a graph paper page?

Because this grid is one of seven backgrounds in Prequel's editor, drawn at the export's own resolution. This page is the same drawing with a download button attached.
