Generate a topographic map background
Contour lines over a landscape nobody surveyed, with every fifth line drawn as an index contour. Pick a colour, a size and how much relief.

- PNG or SVG
- Up to 6K

Size
Every line is a fraction of the short edge, so the pattern looks the same at 1080p and at 6K.

Contour lines, traced not filtered
A contour map is a landscape read as lines of equal height. This page invents the landscape, samples its height on a grid, and traces where each level crosses that grid. Twenty-four levels, with every fifth one drawn heavier, the way an index contour is on a real map.
The tracing is the reason it holds up at 6K. The obvious way to make a field like this is an SVG noise filter, which looks right in a thumbnail and falls apart at wallpaper size: the filter works in eight bits, so what comes out is blocky rectangles and staircase edges. Lines worked out as geometry have no precision to run out of, and they land on whole pixels at any size you pick.
One landscape, seen from different distances
The heights come from the coordinates themselves, hashed, with no seed and no random numbers. The same size and the same relief give you the same map every time, and a bigger size shows you more of the same country rather than a new one.
The Relief slider is how much of that country the frame holds. Low is a few broad hills with wide spacing. High is dense terrain with lines close together.
PNG or SVG
The PNG is painted here, at the size in the dock, and saved to your downloads folder. The SVG is two paths, so it scales to any size afterwards and stays a few kilobytes. Both are yours, with no watermark on either.
Behind a recording
Prequel ships this map as one of seven drawn backgrounds in its editor, where it is traced again at the export's own resolution. Record your Mac's screen, and the editor opens with the zooms already placed, your camera framed and a background behind it.
How it works
Drawing in 3 steps
- Pick the colourEight palettes drawn as the map itself. Carbon and Slate are the quiet ones; Olive and Sand read as a paper map.
- Set the reliefLow is a few broad hills with wide spacing. High is dense country with the lines close together.
- Download itPNG at the size in the dock, or SVG for anything that gets scaled or recoloured later.
What it does
Free, and still worth using
Get smooth contours at 6K
The lines are traced through the height field as geometry, and the sample grid scales with the frame. A tight bend has no facets on it at 6016 across.
Read it like a map
Twenty-four levels with every fifth one heavier. An index contour is what stops a field of lines reading as noise.
Get the same map twice
The heights come from the coordinates themselves, hashed, with no random numbers anywhere. The same settings give the same country every time.
Keep the file off a server
Traced in this tab and saved from this tab. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is queued and there is no watermark.
On a Mac, the editing is already done
Prequel records your screen at its full resolution, then opens an editor with the zooms already placed, your camera framed and a background applied. Export one MP4 at up to 4K.
No credit card required
- Zooms placed on every click
- Camera shaped, sized and framed
- Background, padding and shadow
- Microphone and system on separate gains
- Cursor smoothed and resized

FAQ
The landscape, the sizes and the files
Is it free?
Yes. No account, no card and no watermark. The tracing runs on your own processor, so there is nothing to charge for.
Is the landscape random?
No. Every height is hashed from its own coordinates, so the same size and the same relief give you the same map. A bigger size shows more of the same country.
Can I get a different landscape?
Move the relief slider or change the shape of the frame. Both change which part of the field the frame holds, and how much of it.
Why not use an SVG noise filter?
Because it breaks at wallpaper size. The filter works in eight bits, so a field large enough to read as a background comes out as blocky rectangles and staircase edges. Tracing the lines as geometry has no precision to run out of.
Can I use it commercially?
Yes. It is your file, with no watermark and no attribution asked for.
Why does Prequel have a topographic map page?
Because this map is one of seven backgrounds in Prequel's editor, traced again at the export's own resolution. This page is the same drawing with a download button attached.
