A recorder, and a meter you can trust

The meter is the reason this page exists. It reads the microphone you selected, from the moment it opens, and it follows the level slider, so the bars moving are the bars being recorded. Speak at the volume you will use: bars that barely move mean the level is too low, bars pinned at the ends mean it is too high.

Both are a drag of a slider before you start, and neither is fixable once the take is recorded.

Pause is part of one file

Pause holds the recording and Resume carries on into the same file, so a take with three gaps in it is still one download. The clock counts recorded time rather than the time you spent thinking.

Nothing leaves the tab. Your microphone goes through an audio graph in your browser and into your browser's own encoder, and the result sits in memory until you download it. There is no account, no transcript and no upload.

The file

M4A with AAC in Chrome, Edge and Safari, WebM with Opus in Firefox, both at 128 kbps. That is past the point where speech gains anything from more bitrate, and both open in every editor and attach to any email.

Takes run up to thirty minutes. Audio is small, but the recording is held in the tab until you save it, so the same ceiling applies as to the video tools.

Recording a voiceover for a video

Record here, then put the audio under your footage in whatever you edit in. If the video is a screen recording, Prequel on a Mac records your microphone and your system audio on separate tracks with separate gains, and transcribes the take locally to write captions onto it.

How it works

Recording in 3 steps

  1. Turn on your microphoneClick Turn on microphone and allow access. The level moves as you speak, so you know the right device is live.
  2. Set the levelSpeak at the volume you will use and watch the bars. Raise or lower the microphone slider until they move without filling the meter.
  3. Record and downloadRecord, pause whenever you need to think, then stop and save. The file is ready the moment the recording ends.

What it does

Free, and still worth using

Know the microphone is working before you talk for ten minutes

The meter reads the device you selected, from the moment it opens. It follows the microphone slider, so what you see is what is being recorded.

Stop to think without starting again

Pause holds the recording where it is and Resume carries on into the same file. The clock counts recorded time rather than wall clock time.

Keep what you said to yourself

The audio is encoded by your browser and held in the tab until you download it. There is no upload, no transcript and no account.

Get a file anything will open

M4A with AAC where your browser can write it, WebM with Opus otherwise. Both open in every editor and both attach to an email.

On a Mac, the editing is already done

Prequel records your screen at its full resolution, then opens an editor with the zooms already placed, your camera framed and a background applied. Export one MP4 at up to 4K.

No credit card required

  • Zooms placed on every click
  • Camera shaped, sized and framed
  • Background, padding and shadow
  • Microphone and system on separate gains
  • Cursor smoothed and resized

FAQ

Levels, formats and privacy

Is anything recorded sent to a server?

No. Your microphone goes through an audio graph in the tab and straight into your browser's encoder. The file sits in memory until you download it, and closing the tab discards it.

What format is the audio?

M4A with AAC in Chrome, Edge and Safari, and WebM with Opus in Firefox. Both are 128 kbps, which is past the point where speech stops gaining anything from more.

Can I pause and carry on?

Yes. Pause stops the recording and Resume continues into the same file, so a take with three pauses in it is still one download. The clock counts only what was recorded.

Why is my recording quiet or distorted?

Watch the meter while you speak at your normal volume. Bars that barely move mean the microphone slider is too low, and bars that sit at the ends mean it is too high. Both are fixed before you record rather than after.

Can I record a phone call or a meeting?

This tool records your microphone, so it captures your side and whatever your microphone can hear in the room. Tell anyone else first: recording a person without telling them is against the law in most places.

How long can one recording be?

Thirty minutes. Audio is small, but the recording is held in the tab until you save it, so the same ceiling applies as to the video tools.

Does it transcribe what I say?

No. This page records and nothing else. Prequel transcribes on your Mac, with the model running locally, and writes captions onto a recording.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android both record and download. Keep the tab in front: a browser is allowed to suspend a backgrounded page on a phone, and a suspended page stops recording.
