Every line is a fraction of the short edge, so the pattern looks the same at 1080p and at 6K.

The mat, drawn to your frame
A self-healing cutting mat is a ruled grid, numbered rulers down all four edges and a fan of angles in one corner. Everybody recognises it, and a photograph of one is the wrong file for a background: it is a fixed number of pixels, so it arrives at a different shape stretched and half cropped away.
This page draws the mat at the size you ask for. Pick a 16:9 display or a 9:16 phone and the grid grows columns to suit, the rulers renumber, and the arcs in the corner stay circles.
The fan is the part that matters
Rays at 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 degrees, three arcs with a nick every five degrees, and the angles written on the first arc. Those are the parts that go wrong when a picture of a mat is stretched: a 45 degree ray becomes 51 degrees and the arcs become ellipses. Drawn at your frame's own size, they are the angles they say they are.
Rulers on all four edges
Numbered every five cells, with a long tick on the number and a short one between. Zero sits in the corner the fan comes out of, so the grid, both rulers and the angles all agree about where the origin is. The Grid slider sets how many cells fit across the short edge, from 14 to 72.
Eight colours
Olive is the mat everybody pictures. Slate, Carbon and Blueprint are the ones that sit under a screenshot without competing with it, and Paper is the only palette here where the lines are darker than the ground.
Behind a recording
Prequel ships this mat as the default background in its editor, redrawn at the export's own resolution. Record your Mac's screen, and the editor opens with the zooms already placed, your camera framed and the mat behind it.
How it works
Drawing in 3 steps
- Pick a colourEight palettes, each drawn as the mat itself so you can see what the rulers and the numbers do against the ground.
- Set the size and the gridSizes run from 1080p to a 6K display, with phone and 9:16 among them. The slider sets how many cells fit across the short edge.
- Download itPNG for a wallpaper or a slide, SVG for anything that gets resized later. Both save straight to your downloads folder.
What it does
Free, and still worth using
Get an arc that is still an arc
The fan is drawn at the size you asked for. A photograph of a mat stretched from 16:9 to 9:16 turns its 45 degree ray into 51 degrees and its arcs into ellipses.
Count off any edge
Rulers on all four sides, numbered every five cells, with a long tick on the number. Zero sits in the corner the fan comes out of, so both rulers and the grid agree.
Fill a 6K display
Every line, tick and number is a fraction of the frame's short edge. The mat reads the same at 1920 across and at 6016.
Keep the file off a server
The mat is drawn in this tab and saved from this tab. Nothing is uploaded, there is no queue and there is no watermark.
On a Mac, the editing is already done
Prequel records your screen at its full resolution, then opens an editor with the zooms already placed, your camera framed and a background applied. Export one MP4 at up to 4K.
No credit card required

FAQ
Colours, sizes and the files
Is it free?
Yes. No account, no card, no watermark and no limit on how many you make. The drawing happens in your browser, so a mat costs nothing to serve.
What is the angle fan for?
On a real mat it is for lining up a cut off true. Here it is the part of the picture that says cutting mat at a glance, and it is the reason the drawing is worked out per size rather than scaled.
Can I get it in a size that is not listed?
Download the SVG and resize that. It is paths and a flat fill, so Figma, Illustrator, Sketch and any browser will take it to any size with the hairlines intact.
Will it work as a desktop wallpaper?
That is what the sizes are for. Pick the one matching your display, download the PNG, and set it from System Settings. macOS does not rescale a wallpaper that already fits.
Can I use it commercially?
Yes. Use it in a video, a deck, a product shot or a client's site. There is no watermark and no attribution asked for.
Why does Prequel have a cutting mat page?
Because the mat is the default background in Prequel's editor, where it is redrawn at the export's own resolution. This page is the same drawing with the download button attached.
