Looking for a Snagit alternative?

Snagit documents a screen beautifully and records one plainly: no zooms, no framing, no background, no cursor work. Prequel opens the editor with all four already done and exports at 4K and 120 fps. $9 a month, or $29 once with nothing to renew.

What is Snagit, and what is it good at?

Snagit is TechSmith's capture tool, and it has been on work laptops for twenty years. Grab a region, a window, a scrolling page or a whole panoramic shot, then mark it up: arrows, callouts, numbered steps, blur over anything private, a cut-out of the bit that matters. It turns a sequence of captures into a step-by-step guide, and it runs on Windows and Mac, which is why it is the one tool a mixed team can standardise on.

It records video too, with a webcam and a microphone, and it will turn a short recording into an animated GIF. Licences are $39 per user per year.

Why do people look for a Snagit alternative?

It is a screenshot tool that also records. The video side is capture, trim and share. There is no automatic zoom, no cursor smoothing, no background behind the window, no camera framing. For documentation that is exactly right. For a product demo it means the finished video is the raw take.

It is a subscription now. Snagit was bought once for years, and the current licence is $39 per user per year. For a tool opened twice a month, a renewal notice invites a look at what else is out there.

Camtasia is the upsell. TechSmith's answer to "I need to edit this properly" is a second, dearer product, and learning it is a real investment.

Is Prequel a good Snagit alternative?

For video, yes. For screenshots and step-by-step guides, no.

Prequel records the screen, the camera, the microphone and system audio as separate tracks and opens the editor with the first pass made: zooms placed on every click and every burst of typing, tilted, with focus falling away from the subject, the camera framed over a background, the cursor smoothed and hidden when it idles. Captions are transcribed on your Mac. The timeline cuts, splits, retimes and blurs.

Export is one MP4 or HEVC file at up to 4K and 120 frames a second, for $9 a month or $29 once, with no renewal to approve.

What do you give up by switching?

Screenshots, and the documentation workflow built on them: numbered steps, callouts, templates, scrolling capture, the whole image editor. Prequel does not take a screenshot.

Also Windows. Snagit is the same product on both platforms and Prequel is an Apple Silicon Mac app, so a mixed team recording how-to guides keeps Snagit.

How it works

Three steps to a finished video

  1. Record your screen and cameraPick a display, a window or an area you drag out, with your camera, microphone and system audio each on their own track.
  2. Zooms and layout are applied automaticallyPrequel reads where you clicked and typed, then places the zooms, frames your camera and sets a background behind it.
  3. Edit, export and shareMove a zoom, trim a clip or fix a caption, then export one MP4 at up to 4K or send a link that plays anywhere.

Zoom and pan

Zooms that follow the action

Prequel automatically zooms in when you click or type, then softens the rest of the window so viewers know where to look. Every zoom is added to the timeline, so you can move, retime or delete it at any time.

Layouts

Switch layouts clip by clip

Choose from fourteen layouts for the same take: camera in the corner, beside the screen, split with it or hidden entirely. Use one layout for the whole video, or change it clip by clip.

Subtitles

Subtitles you can edit like text

Prequel transcribes every word on your Mac when the editor opens. Fix captions by typing in the transcript, choose a subtitle style or delete a sentence to remove it from the video.

Teleprompter

A teleprompter that follows your voice

Prequel hangs your script from the notch, just under the camera, and follows your voice — the word you're saying lights up as you say it. Wander off script and it waits for you; skip ahead or fall behind and it catches up within a couple of words.

Apple Silicon · macOS 14+

Native

Built for your Mac

Prequel is a native app for Apple Silicon. It records with the system’s own capture, encodes on the video hardware and draws every frame in Metal. Your recordings stay on your disk.

The editor

Everything you would have done by hand

It opens by itself when you stop recording, on the take you just made. Nothing to import, nothing to line up.

Guide attention automatically

Prequel zooms into the part of the screen that matters: the cursor, a region you draw, or whatever you are typing into. Set the level, the speed and how much the rest of the frame blurs.

Look present without taking over the video

Your camera stays framed and out of the way: circle, squircle, rounded, wide or portrait, in any corner and any size. It is never burned into the recording, so none of it is decided while you record.

Make recordings look designed

Add a background, padding and a shadow without editing any of it by hand. Your own wallpaper by default, seven bundled presets, gradients and solids.

Cut the parts nobody needs to see

Trim the pauses yourself, slice by slice, with a waveform under every clip. Layout, background and audio can all change mid-take.

Keep the pointer out of the way

Fifteen pointer styles, resized so the cursor survives a zoom. Smoothed while it travels, and hidden after a few seconds of stillness.

Export the frame you approved

The preview and the exporter draw the same plan, so the file matches what you signed off in the editor.

Quality

Videos stay sharp at 4K

Capture and export run on your Mac's own media engine. 1080p at 60 fps records without dropping frames, and 4K is a setting you pick.

FAQ

Zooms, exports and the rest

What is the best Snagit alternative on a Mac?

For video, Prequel: it records screen, camera, microphone and system audio as separate tracks and opens the editor with zooms placed on every click and every burst of typing, the camera framed over a background and the cursor smoothed. For screenshots, annotation and step-by-step guides, CleanShot X is the closest Mac equivalent, and Snagit itself is still the one that runs on both platforms.

How much does Snagit cost?

$39 per user per year on TechSmith's store, which is a subscription rather than the perpetual licence Snagit used to sell. Checked on 22 October 2026.

Does Snagit record video with zoom effects?

No. Snagit records the screen with a webcam and a microphone and lets you trim, cut and combine clips afterwards. Zooms, cursor smoothing, backgrounds and camera framing are not part of it, and TechSmith's answer to that is Camtasia, a separate and dearer product.

Is Prequel a good Snagit alternative?

For anything that will be watched rather than read, yes. Prequel makes the cinematic pass automatically, cuts and retimes on a timeline, blurs anything private and exports at up to 4K and 120 frames a second for $9 a month or $29 once. It does not take screenshots, so a team writing documentation keeps Snagit for that half.
